|Attention Renters: Requirements to qualify for COVID-19 Eviction Moratorium|
If you are experiencing financial hardship due to the COVID-19 lockdown, please note that you CANNOT simply stop paying your rent even though the Governor declared a statewide moratorium on evictions. The order comes with several important rules and stipulations:
1) You are required to declare in writing to your landlord within seven days of your rental due date that you cannot pay all or part of your rent due to COVID-19. Below is a sample letter drafted by the Legal Aid Society of San Diego that you can use. Be sure to keep a copy with your landlord's signature or stamp on it for your records.
2) You are required to submit documentation to your landlord showing proof that you are suffering an economic hardship directly due to the outbreak. You will have to prove you had a job and were laid off or had your hours cut.
3) When the moratorium is lifted, the back rent will still be due in a “timely” manner. Your landlord will likely set up a repayment plan.
